A research question you can actually use
A thesis often feels stuck before the writing starts. The problem is often a question that is too wide, too vague or impossible to answer with the evidence you can access.
Write these five sentences
- 1What
I want to understand exactly what.
- 2Whom
I will study which population or field.
- 3Where and when
I will examine it where and during which period.
- 4With what evidence
I can access which data or sources.
- 5What kind of answer
The answer could show what relationship, difference, process or meaning.
Tightening the question first can save days of rewriting. Check that every term is clear, the population is reachable and the evidence can support the kind of answer you expect.
A quick example
Too broad: “How does social media affect university students?”
More workable: “How is daily Instagram use associated with self-reported study concentration among first-year undergraduate students at one Greek university during the spring semester?”
The second version identifies a platform, an outcome, a population, a setting and a period. It also avoids claiming cause before the research design can support it.
